An AdBlue Problem with an Audi A6 diesel

Diesel fuel has been in use for several decades and during that time, it has become widely adopted in both the transportation and automotive industries. Manufacturers have favoured offering diesel vehicles due to the growing demand for them. Consumers also favoured diesel vehicles for their lower fuel cost and reliability. The infrequent breakdowns of diesel engines further contributed to their popularity.

Among the many brands utilising diesel fuel in Europe, Audi was one of the pioneers who dared to install a diesel engine in an executive car, such as the Audi A6. This bold move proved successful as the brand managed to effectively minimise engine noise from entering the cabin. The driving experience was excellent and the engine was dependable. However, emissions remain the only challenge.

The introduction of Adblue over a decade ago was designed to decrease emissions from diesel vehicles, and whilst it has significantly reduced harmful emissions it was not enough to prevent the decision to phase out diesel vehicles by 2030.

However, before this occurs, those still driving diesel vehicles need to have their vehicles maintained to keep their emissions within acceptable levels to pass the annual MOT Test and ensure that their Audi continues to perform as the manufacturer intended.

One of our clients encountered a problem with their Adblue system in their 2016 Audi A6, causing increased emissions. Mrs H visited Fitch Autos and detailed her issue, which was a countdown timer issue related to the Adblue system.

Our lead Audi technician, Matt listened carefully to our customer and considered all possible factors that could be impacting the car’s Adblue system when tackling this Audi A6 countdown timer issue.

Faults Found

To resolve the client’s Adblue issue in their Audi A6, our lead technician, Matt started by verifying the problem.

He inspected the vehicle and found several clues that could help guide the repair process.

The first clue was that the dash was displaying an Adblue warning and the countdown timer which remained even after refilling the AdBlue fluid. This indicated to our Audi technician that the Engine Management System (EMS) and the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems may not be functioning correctly.

The second clue was that the client had told us that she had previously taken the car to the dealer, who suggested that a different component was causing the issue and performed a software update. However, the repair was unsuccessful.

Fortunately, the client searched for a local Audi specialist and came across Fitch Autos after reading our customer reviews and blogs. She believed that we were the right team to help her resolve the Adblue issue in her Audi A6 – and she was right!

With years of experience in handling Adblue problems, Matt approached the A6 issue with confidence. He was convinced that the malfunction was solely due to the two major systems.

To ensure a thorough resolution, our Audi specialist conducted our thorough 15-step diagnostic evaluation. At Fitch Autos all of our technicians follow this process to efficiently and effectively solve problems. We don’t guess. We don’t swap out unnecessary parts. We do provide a first-time fix and great service and value.

Diagnostic Procedure

Having taken charge of the Audi for diagnosis, our technician immediately launched into our proven 15-step diagnostic procedure. He needed to identify and address the root cause before finding a solution.

As part of the procedure, our Audi Specialist took the car on a short test drive to observe any issues. Test drives are often crucial in diagnosing problems of this nature and they help us gain a better understanding of the potential underlying causes.

During the drive, the fault presented itself, allowing our Audi expert to confirm his suspicions.

Fitch Autos Audi specialist used the same Audi Manufacturer technology that the dealers use to scan the vehicle for any relevant fault codes and discovered several errors related to the SCR system. This confirmed his suspicion that the problem lay within the SCR system and required a deeper investigation.

Prior to delving into the SCR system, Matt conducted live data checks to examine the incoming and outgoing signals. He noted an irregularity, leading him to consult the repair history that had taken place at the previous garage. This simple step can often shorten the diagnostic time.

However, in this case the search for a solution didn’t yield any results. Undeterred, our Audi specialist continued his efforts.

He checked the Adblue fluid levels and found that the liquid was of high quality, meeting the recommended standards. Sometimes, people try to save money by using low-quality Adblue fluid, but it can harm the vehicle’s inner workings. Fortunately, this was not the case with Mrs H’s Audi A6, as she had used the recommended type of Adblue.

With the fluid in good condition, the software functioning properly, and the issue not being a common one in the Audi, our Audi specialist was faced with a puzzle. He suspected that the problem may lie in hardware components. So, he decided to further investigate.

During his inspection, he discovered that the Adblue pump was not generating enough pressure to properly deliver the fluid. This was the source of the issue!

Having identified the problem, our technician moved on to the next step: the repair.

Solving The Problem

Our Audi expert tested and retested the Adblue pump but it wasn’t producing the required amount of pressure. The only way out was to replace the faulty component and install a new one in its place.

Our Audi expert replaced the faulty Adblue pump with a new one, refilled the Adblue liquid, and checked the pressure levels. The system was now functioning smoothly and no errors were found after scanning. The car was ready for pickup by the owner.
