VW Golf Infotainment Malfunction

Screen at Fault for Our Client’s Golf

In 1976, Volkswagen unveiled the VW Golf, and as they say, “the rest is history”.

Over the years, the Golf has seen various updates in size and design, evolving into a vehicle that not only looks and handles impressively but also offers a safe and extremely enjoyable driving experience.

The latest versions of the Golf come equipped with cutting-edge technology, which, while impressive, can sometimes encounter issues due to the intricate network of wiring, modules and connections.

A prime example of this was seen when a recent client brought their VW Golf to our Volkswagen experts at Fitch Autos. Our client’s 2017 Golf GTI had an annoying infotainment screen issue, resulting in a blank display, rendering the radio and all its advanced features inoperative.

It’s not what you want from your vehicle.

The infotainment screen issue left our client without the following:

  • Navigation (Sat Nav)
  • Vehicle settings
  • Podcasts
  • Radio
  • Music playlists
  • Smartphone connectivity
  • Bluetooth
  • And much more…

This left the client listening to nothing but the VW’s engine, which isn’t a bad sound if we’re honest, but driving to your favourite music or an engaging podcast is always better.

Luckily, the client chose to bring their vehicle to our Volkswagen specialists at Fitch Autos. We have decades of experience working on all VW models and can solve any problem your vehicle has.

VW Golf Infotainment Malfunction

Finding our Client’s GTI Screen Fault

At Fitch Autos, our VW experts have the experience, knowledge and technical know-how needed to solve the infotainment system’s fault.

To begin with, our experts confirmed the issue at hand with a test drive. This allowed our technicians to get first-hand experience of the problem that’s been plaguing our client.

Next, our Volkswagen specialists used the ODIS VW specialist diagnostic tool to check if any error codes were present.

The following error codes presented themselves:

  • U1123 – This indicates a problem with the data bus connection
  • U1054 – Pinpoints a communication failure in the Gateway Control Unit with the Information Electronics 1 Control Unit

These codes suggested the infotainment unit was essentially inoperative – which would explain the blank screen the client has been seeing.

While error codes might not mean anything to you, they do provide a deeper insight into the problem at hand. Our VW experts are well-versed in this.

Eager to address the screen issue without immediately resorting to a replacement, our technicians explored the Volkswagen service bulletins.

As your local independent VW specialists, we have access to the same level of technical information as the main Volkswagen dealerships. This allows us to provide you with dealership-level information and servicing at better than dealer value.

Unfortunately, there weren’t any relevant bulletins available.

Undeterred, our experts removed the infotainment unit to review the wiring to the module. Upon testing the live and earth feeds, which were functional, our technicians then used an oscilloscope to examine the CANBUS network.

The use of an Oscilloscope is something not many garages would do. However, at Fitch Autos, we like to be thorough and provide you with the highest level of service.

The Oscilloscope testing proved that the CANBUS network was in good working order, leading our experts to suspect that the issue likely originated from the infotainment unit itself. They surmised that there was an internal malfunction preventing the infotainment unit from operating correctly.

Replacing the Infotainment Unit

Before our technicians proceeded with any further work, we called our client to discuss our findings and the recommended work required.

At Fitch Autos, you’re always kept in the loop. We only begin working on your vehicle once we’ve got the green light from you. You remain in complete control from start to finish.

After exhausting all other options to avoid a complete replacement, it became clear that the entire VW infotainment unit would need to be replaced.

Our specialists sourced a genuine VW 5F Infotainment unit replacement to ensure the VW Golf received nothing but the best quality for optimal performance. As your local independent Volkswagen experts, we only use genuine VW or high-grade alternative parts on your vehicle.

You always receive the level of care needed for your vehicle to operate like new.

Our expert technicians removed the faulty infotainment unit and installed the new one. Installing the brand-new unit was not just a matter of physical replacement, it also required re-coding, something our specialists can perform on any VW part.

Once the part was installed and re-coded, we performed several tests to ensure our client’s VW Golf was back in complete working condition.

Our client was happy to see their VW infotainment system fully functional again and to have their vehicle back so quickly; this is something the main VW dealerships couldn’t offer.
