How to Fix Vehicle Locking & Alarm System Issue in Range Rover Evoque

The Range Rover Evoque is a popular luxury SUV produced by the quintessentially British marque, Land Rover. One of the biggest reasons for this vehicles popularity is that it’s built to perfection. The design, features, performance specifications, and luxury aspects of this car are rarely challenged by any other SUV.

Therefore, it would come as a surprise if trivial issues, like a malfunctioning door locking and alarm system, affect this vehicle.

Unfortunately, every vehicle manufacturer brand on the road has a fault that is more common. For Range Rover, door lock problems are its kryptonite. As experts in looking after premium vehicles, like Range Rover, this is something that Fitch Autos have seen on more that one occasion.

Sadly, one of our clients got hit by the same issue in her 2014 Range Rover. The SUV would not lock or unlock when she used the key FOB. The issue persisted when our client used the central locking mechanism. Interestingly, the manual locking and unlocking feature were working fine.

Normally, if it is an electrical issue, replacing the batteries in the key FOB does the job. But this seemed like a far deeper problem, considering Mrs. Cs SUV was eight years old.

Regardless, our senior technician Matt Fitch took it upon himself to un-jumble the puzzle.

Faults Found

The first task on Matts assessment list was to check all possible faults. He operated the key FOB to try and make the locks and alarm system work. But nothing seemed to work in the proper fashion. When Matt pressed the unlock button, only a few doors opened, while the rest remained closed. On top of that, the alarm would sound when Matt pressed the lock button.

That was unusual behaviour, which sparked our Range Rover specialists interest and he started to dig deeper.

Our Land Rover technician had to find out the reason behind the problem. So, he checked all the doors manually, and interestingly, they wouldn’t open all at once. Even when he pressed the unlock button from inside the SUV, the locks refused to budge. And it was only when he physically inspected each door, that he found all the locks to be in fine working order.

Naturally, one would think that the key FOB would be to blame. But the vehicle’s central locking system was also not working, which pointed towards a possible wiring or electrical issue.

So, to find the right fix to the problem, Matt initiated the 15-step diagnostic procedure, used by all the technicians at Fitch Autos. The detailed process allowed Matt to identify the issue, find the source of the problem, and then apply the solution to resolve Mrs. Cs Range Rover locking issue.

Diagnostic Procedure

The 15-step diagnostic procedure proved helpful for our technician as he battled his way to an eclectic solution. The 2014 Range Rover was proving to be a tough adversary before Matt used the detailed process for the diagnosis.

The first step for our technician was to check the SUV for any relevant fault codes. Matt ran the diagnostic tool, but nothing turned up on the scan. In other words, none of the sensors inside the SUV caught the malfunction.

Our technician learned that the fault wasnt lying in an area with a lot of sensors. But to double-check, he still inspected the electrical wires for damage.

Matt opened the Topix wiring diagram to trace the fault back to its roots. Luckily, there was nothing wrong with the wiring and all the wires going down and leading up to the locks on each door were in perfect health.

That could indicate a key FOB problem, but since the central locking system was also not working, Matt reached a simple conclusion.

The door latches had failed internally, and that’s why there was no response from the door locks. A simple issue like this caused a lot of pain to Mrs. C. Fortunately, the annoying locks led her to us, and Matt was able to diagnose the problem and employ the solution.

The Solution

Once our expert Land Rover technician checked and rechecked the fault, he ensured the solution was the right one, and then he went on to apply it to the 2014 Range Rover.

Matt used the Topix wiring diagram – the approved Land Rover technical information resource for a Range Rover. He began by testing the power cables, which turned out to be perfect. Next up were the ground wires for each of the doors. Our technician tested all of them one after the other and declared all of them to be fine as well. The only other culprit apart from power and ground wires were the signal wires.

Interestingly, even the signal wires were working well. And that is when Matt decided to check the latches for deterioration. Sure enough, the door latch was malfunctioning.

The Range Rover Evoque is susceptible to such problems as there is a history of malfunctioning door latches and locks in this model. Matt was aware of this, which led him to make a quick decision.

Fortunately, for Mrs. C, Matt is a seasoned Range Rover technician, and he had plenty of experience, changing latches and locks on similar SUVs. He got brand-new latches for the doors and fitted them on the Range Rover Evoque.

Our Land Rover technician connected all the wires back to the doors and tested the locking, unlocking, and alarm systems from inside the SUV. Sure enough, everything worked fine. So, the next step was to test the repair from the key FOB. Unsurprisingly, that worked fine as well, much to the delight of Mrs. C, who was given the news on a call.

After the solution was put in place and the repair was complete, Matt did a necessary code scan, and thankfully nothing turned up on the diagnostic tool.

Our technician did his due diligence, performed a maintenance check, and delivered the vehicle back to Mrs. C.

Our client happily accepted her vehicle and handed back the keys to the courtesy car. Not only was she satisfied, but Mrs. C promised to consult Fitch Autos (before anyone else) for anything related to her vehicle in the future.

Our Commitment & Your Satisfaction

Our senior Land Rover specialist, Matt, was immediately on the task, when Mrs. C, drove in to Fitch Autos, with her 2014 Range Rover Evoque. Matts vast experience told him to initiate the 15-step diagnostic procedure and that helped solve the problem for our client.

The 2014 Range Rover Evoque had a vehicle locking, unlocking, and alarm system problem. The initial inspection led our technician to believe that the key FOB could be the issue. But a deep analysis turned up something entirely different. The key FOB was not the problem. The wiring was perfectly fine as well.

The only issue was the door latch. A small component like that caused Mrs. C a lot of inconvenience, but thanks to Matt and his skillful work, the repair was quick and easy.
